What in the world?
Nora pushed open the door of Declan’s room. It had been wide open when she checked on him last night before watching the movie with Reid. She always left it open so she could hear him if he called for her in the middle of the night.
Declan lay on the floor in the middle of his quilt, head pillowed on one chubby arm. Asleep.
Hands on her hips, her pulse hammering in her throat, Nora watched her son sleep. He’d started climbing out of his crib at home a couple of weeks ago but then he’d stopped and she’d—wrongly—assumed he’d had his fun doing it, then lost interest.
Guess not. He must have closed the door but how he’d done so without waking her up was baffling. It wasn’t as though he could reach the doorknob, so he’d have to have pushed it shut. But she hadn’t heard it, and her razor-sharp hearing had never failed her.
Good thing he hadn’t come into her room last night.
Her cheeks warmed. Yeah, some of that might have traumatized Declan for life. And wouldn’t that have been a disaster if Declan had run into Reid. One sight of her pint-size wonder would have sent Reid screaming for the hills.
No matter. Reid must have left well before Declan had performed his Houdini act. And that was perfect. Exactly as she’d expected. Their one night was over and she had several great memories to keep her warm for a good long while. Yeah, the sex had been wow and then some. No surprise there. But the way he’d made her feel...treasured. Beautiful. Exciting. That had been totally unexpected. Wonderful. Reid Chamberlain was so much more than a talented lover.
And if she’d been a little sad when she woke up and realized Reid had already left—without saying goodbye—no one had to know. She’d take that secret to the grave. She shouldn’t have asked him to stay in the first place and she appreciated that Reid had figured out a way to let her save face, but not give in. Waking up together would have opened up their relationship to further speculation and there was nothing to speculate about.
Declan’s eyes blinked open. “Daadee.”
“What’s that?”
Her son had added a new word to his vocabulary apparently. She loved the discovery process, where she got a chance to learn more about what went on in his head and communicate with this amazing little creature she’d been gifted with.
“Daadee.”
“Daddy? Oh, honey.” Nora shut her eyes for a blink. That was the one word she’d dreaded him learning. “Your daddy is in heaven. It’s just you and me now.”
A travesty. And what she wouldn’t give for it to be different. But it was the cold, hard truth. If she’d loved Sean a little less or wasn’t so worried about Declan being hurt by future loss, she might consider dating a nice man who could eventually fill that daddy-shaped hole in her son’s heart.
After all, Declan would know Sean only from pictures.
